Do we forget memories or do we just forget how to recall them?

2021.10.18 10:11 horsey-the-blue Do we forget memories or do we just forget how to recall them?

I'm sure we've all suddenly remembered something from long ago. That proves that we never actually forgot it.
Does that mean we never forget anything? It's all just kind of in there but we forget how to retrieve the memory until something in our present accidentally trigger it?
Does that extend to really mundane things? Like do I technically have the capacity to recall ever meal I've eaten. I would just need some way to recall each memory?

Your subconscious mind has all the data starting from your childhood, and it helps your conscious mind apply it. Lucid dreams are thought of as an entrance to this data bank, which means you can interact with your subconscious mind that is almost impossible during awakening life. Can this interaction also train your mind for real life?

2021.10.18 10:11 AusGlitterati The Seven-Game Nuzlocke: Fire Red (Chapter 1/4)

The Seven-Game Nuzlocke: Fire Red (Chapter 1/4)
So I beat a few vanilla Nuzlockes and that was well and good, they've successfully breathed new life into a franchise that's gone stale for me and though it didn't always go as well as I'd have hoped, I'm having a lot of fun! But that being said, I grow super attached to my chosen teammates (it breaks my heart to lose them!) and ditching them in the void after I've used them to beat the Champion sits badly while I skip to another game and do it all over again. I'm highly sentimental that way, so I'm adding some continuity with this planned mega-adventure! Gonna play through all seven gens and treat it like one looong story.
Fire Red -> Heart Gold -> Emerald -> Platinum -> Black 2 -> X -> Ultra Sun
Nuzlocke rules are more or less the basic ones. - Nicknames mandatory (as if I ever don't nickname my Pokemon, pfft) - Any fainted Pokemon is dead forever - Only catching the first Pokemon found per route - Dupes clause is in effect, so I can reroll if I've already got that one. If I've got all the Pokemon in the route, I'll catch the first one found again. Didn't think this would be an issue, but Gen 1's got a more shallow pool of Pokemon than I remembered.
Any team members who survive the final battle (usually the Champion) get to come with me to the next gen. I'll hack them into the next game as extra starters, more or less, and that way I don't have to part with my best boys and girls.
The backswing is that if I lose any Pokemon at any point, that evolutionary line is out of bounds for me in every game from that point on.
I'm also going to actively avoid finishing with single-evolution Pokemon, because starting a new generation with Snorlax or Lapras sounds like it'll take the Nuzlocke challenge feel out of the game.
The last alteration was using a randomiser to remove impossible evolutions. Trade evolutions are now accessible by level or stone.

Pallet Town ----------------
So I chose Bulbasaur \[**Bud**\] and, though it was ultimately a pragmatic decision rather than one of preference, I immediately loved him. You always love your first child the most, right? Though Bulbasaur is not my favourite of the original three, he's definitely the safest option as far as nuzlocke challenges go. He has incredible matchups through the first half of the gyms and maintains a steady power curve through the endgame, so I pinned my hopes on him. Right off the bat, Bud was killed by the rival \[**Bastien**\]'s Charmander. I didn't remember to get the potion from my computer & Charmander got off *two* Scratch crits. I mean... ouch. That was a rude awakening and a painful reminder of what I was about to do. I was off to a hideous start already, and the Bulbasaur line is forever gone. My heart is broken in all of five minutes. My arrogance and lack of preparation cost Bud his life, and that sucked. But I made the commitment, so the show must go on. No mulligans here. We deal with the misclicks, misplays and unlucky crits no matter what.

Pallet Town Reprise ----------------------------
So after waking up from that HORRIBLE Final Destination-esque nightmare, I immediately got the potion out of my computer because no way am I letting that happen again. Though Squirtle would have been a personal preference, I know I can trip and fall over water Pokemon throughout the game, so I make another pragmatic decision (because that worked so well last time) and choose Charmander \[**Zaire**\]. Zaire was every bit as vicious as she was in my premonition, and she mauled Bastien's Squirtle to death and loved it. Vengeance felt good, but the weight of Bud's death still weight heavily on our shoulders as we moved on to be Professor Oak's errand boy - frankly, it's the least we could do for him after he gave me a starter.

Route 1 -----------
We ran into a Rattata \[**Gnawtie**\] and broke it gently to him that glory was never going to be his. Sorry Gnawtie, but there's just *no* way I'm using Raticate unless I get super desperate. Zaire sharpened her claws on many victims to get an early level lead since I knew Bastien was every bit as vindictive as I was, and we weren't going to let him get ahead of us.
Route 22 -------------
This route blessed us with Mankey \[**Agressi**\]. Unfortunately for Agressi, while she packs one heck of a punch, she's exceptionally frail and I don't trust myself with her life, so she can't be one of our main squad. Bastien ambushed us and challenged us to a rematch. I'm still sore about what our malicious rival did to Bud in that nightmare I had, so I encouraged Zaire to scratch his Pidgey & Squirtle. She did so, much harder than necessary, and that was another easy win. We're never going to get complacent again. In Bud's memory, this we vow.

Route 2 -----------
Pidgey \[**Flap Flap**\] awaited us in Route 2 with fantasies of being a part of a Nuzlocke victory squad! Well, he wasn't going to make it either. A little too *Modest* for his own good, we saw, so we thought we'd save him from himself by keeping him away from the cruelty of the outside world. He doesn't need to know I'd swap him for Spearow or Doduo at the earliest opportunity.

Viridian Forest ---------------------
The bug-infested forest brought us an opportunity as we ran into a Metapod! Butterfree's early and mid-game dominance and late-game utility with hyper-accurate Sleep Powder is something that definitely piqued my intrigue, and I was ready to catch it. Zaire disagreed. Zaire thinks that *she's* the star of the team, the carry, the undisputed hero of our story, and any up and comers are a threat to her position and glory. She destroyed Metapod with a critical scratch, triggering some memories of Bud's traumatic death. I had some harsh words with her, but I don't know how much of it Zaire took to heart as she learned Metal Claw and evolved into Charmeleon, becoming even stronger. The bugs and trainers in the area quivered as we burned a path through to the next town and I hastily moved on as the forest turned to ash behind us.
Pewter City ----------------
Gym leader Brock foolishly laughed in our face as we challenged his Rock/Ground types with our Fire-type starter, but as we've witnessed on the journey so far, Zaire is a stone-cold psychopath. Not much remained of Geodude and Onix but dust after those Metal Claws tore them apart. We snatched the badge and pocketed Rock Tomb, wondering who we'd use it on as we moved on. Zaire was an option, but we had better ideas, and with Ember, she didn't need that coverage. Someone else might.

Route 3 -----------
We did our best to skip a bunch of trainers in case we wanted to train up a new team member, then we ran into level three Jigglypuff, which made me sweat because I knew Zaire was sharpening her claws at the mere *thought* of someone else getting her spotlight. Remembering the Butterfree that could have been but never was, Zaire was banned from this fight. Instead, Agressi and Gnawtie took turns whittling its health down one turn out of the five they were put into permasleep. Jigglypuff was not going into the box easy, even though she was only level three. She wanted her freedom, and it showed. She popped out of *six* poke balls before finally being overwhelmed by the seventh one - lucky, because I only had one left! I named her \[**Della\]** and then we had to backtrack to the Poke Mart before marching on.

Route 4 -----------
Some bloke offered us a Magikarp for some money. Though tempted, we decided we could just fish it up anywhere with an Old Rod we would soon acquire in the town next to the daycare centre. Sorry, Magikarp, but I'd rather have the $500.

Mt Moon -------------
Fortune or lack of brought Zubat \[**Nosferatu**\] our way, but since he would be stuck as a Golbat because of how Fire Red blocks evolutions that weren't in the original games, we grimaced decided we could do better. We temporarily forgot our vow to avoid getting complacent. Zaire's cockiness that stemmed from being a (formerly) unstoppable force almost got her killed when another Zubat confused her to the point where she smacked himself in the face until I yeeted her out of the fight and back into the Pokemon centre, but we made it through.
Route 4 Reprise -----------------------
Since we declined the Magikarp at the beginning of Route 4, we were able to run into Spearow \[**Mad Lad**\], whom I happily added to the team before remembering that we already had Zaire, who would grow her wings by the time we could Fly. As per the original plan, if we had Bud, Mad Lad would have had a place in the final lineup in the Indigo League, but he seemed superfluous now. Sorry, buddy. Like everyone else so far, he was just upstaged by the sheer dominance of Zaire. Zaire learned Mega Punch from some bloke, and even I was beginning to fear what I had created.

Cerulean City -------------------
Getting into Cerulean City, we were starting to worry. We didn't have an answer to Misty's Water-type Pokemon. Zaire was strong, but she was the only one who'd been getting experience. We were not about to risk a wipe by underestimating Misty's Starmie - that thing is absurdly powerful so early into the game, and Water Pulse carries an added danger of confusion - something we can't do much about without switching in a sacrificial lamb. I could use the box fodder, but even though I'm not going to invest in them, I don't want them to die. Ever! We could risk fighting through confusion, but remembering Zaire punching herself in the face three times in a row in Mt Moon was the final nail in that coffin. Not an option. We find someone else, or we grind, and Zaire might not like that decision, but she'd live. That's what's important. We headed north and ran into Bastien, who foolishly put his faith in a team of scrubs (no offence Gnawtie and Flap Flap) rather than power levelling his starter the way we did. It was a complete massacre of Embers and Mega Punches as Zaire devoured my so-called rival's team, including the Wartortle. Zaire weathered the Water Gun with ease and punched Wartortle in the head, and we beat him again. I wondered if perhaps we were too careful and maybe Zaire could power through Misty too, but... Wartortle isn't Starmie, and Water Gun isn't Water Pulse. Better not risk it. We have an incredibly long journey ahead of us with long-term repercussions, and we have to keep mistakes to an absolute minimum.

Route 24 -------------
Route 24 presented us not with the Oddish we were frantically searching for, but with a Weedle \[**Buzzle**\] that we caught without disguising our rancour behind a loving smile. Butterfree can be genuinely helpful, but we haven't got anything for a Beedrill, and I told him so right to his stupid Weedle face and threw him in the box.
Route 25 -------------
But on Route 25, we finally found an Oddish \[**Fun Guy**\] whom we gleefully caught as gently as we could - which meant no Zaires allowed. Fun Guy was a big sigh of relief because I wasn't looking forward to an endless grind of rabble to get Zaire up high enough to rid myself of worry. We taught him Bullet Seed right away and with the plethora of trainers on Route 25 (including a lot of rock/ground types), we got him up to a satisfying level. We rescued Bill from the disturbing consequences of his incredibly shady experiments and trudged on down to the Cerulean City gym. We were ready for Misty.

Cerulean City Reprise -------------------------------
During the battles in which Fun Guy wiped the swimming pool floor with the gym trainers, he evolved into a Gloom! We stared Misty down with a strong plant boy, and she didn't look so scary anymore. Zaire sat on the sidelines and watched her new brother take her place as the current apple of my eye, and Fun Guy absolutely destroyed the Staryu. Misty's Starmie came out, and though I held all the cards, I was stocked up with Super Potions in case something went wrong. Long story short, I *adore* Starmie! I can't wait to get one of my own. It's possibly my favourite Pokemon in the first generation, and I know how punishing it can be to underestimate it even if it's got the disadvantage. Well... all that apprehension and overpreparation went to waste. Fun Guy's Bullet Seed hit five times, critting twice, and Misty's ace was down just like that. My jaw dropped, as did Zaire's I'm sure, as Fun Guy one-shot that poor thing. Welp, that's badge two!
Happy to share the rest of my journey if anyone's interested. I don't have photos to share - I only remembered to take them near the end of the game. I'm very visual with HeartGold so far, but the odd Simpsons meme is all I've got for most of Fire Red.
Thanks for having a gander and wish me luck!
